Prologue: Planning for a three week trip

I began planning about seven months before our departure date.

  • For inspiration I watched everything from Rick Steve’s Europe to countless hours of YouTube videos. I also read various web sites covering the places I wanted to see.

  • TripIt is a web site and app that allows you to plan your trip in a linear manner. Create a trip and then “Add a Plan” to it. The plans are flights, accomodations, car rentals, theatre tickets. You book plans with an begin date and time and an end date and time. It provides a linear progression through the duration of your trip. With the help of Rome2Rio you can ensure you are leaving one city with enough travel time to get to the next. TripIt has both a free and pro version. The pro version has more active tools such as Seat Tracker, Fare Tracker, Check-In Reminder and other tools.

Resources Used

We present a comprehensive suite designed to facilitate operational excellence and sustained growth.

One of the few really helpful YouTube video channels is “Aplins in the Alps” by Jana and Brett, by two people who live in the region. They know the area inside and out and provide useful tips. But don’t click on them yet, I have plenty of indispensable information here.

Other web sites:

  • SSB CCF, this is where you can buy your Swiss Travel Pass or Half-fare pass. Both are a little on the pricey side, but you’ll have to pay for your travel on the ultra-convenient and clean Swiss buses, trams, trans and even boats. They explain which is the best option for your situation. You can purchase passes for the number of days you plan to spend in the region.

  • www.rome2rio.com is an indispensable tool for learning the best means of transportation between towns and cities.

  • Google Maps is a free tool that allows you to get a better feel for the distances between places by air, train, bus, car, or foot.

  • Google Earth gives you a satellite view of the places you are interested in viewing. You can sign into Google Earth and create a project for organizing your trip. You can enter a place name, submit and Google Earth will take you there. It displays a popup window with information about your destination. You can keep the default text or replace it with your own notes and images.

After all that planning, the departure day finally arrives.
Time to take to the sky and find out what’s over the horizon.
